I was recently rummaging around my record collection and ended up playing a couple of albums by one of my old favorite heavy metal outfits. Then I thought "wonder if there's anything about Rock Goddess on the web..."

What, nothing? NOTHING?! Apart from a reference from some book about rock music, there's nothing there that Google knows about anyhow. Time to do something about that!

The band was formed in London (Wandsworth, I think) around 1977, and their lineup was Jody Turner, Julie Turner, Donnica Colman and Tracey Lamb (who later moved to Girlschool and was replaced by Dee O'Malley). For a couple of years they did London pub gigs, limited mainly by the fact that Julie was only a munchkin and shouldn't have been in the pubs... later on the band toured as support with Y&T and Def Leppard as well as doing gigs of their own. They called it a day sometime in the mid eighties. If anyone reading this knows what the girls are doing now, please email me.

At the time, there were really only two all girl rock bands that were any good, Rock Goddess and Girlschool. Girlschool got most of the attention for some reason - they weren't anywhere near as good as Rock Goddess IMHO!

Jody wrote the songs, sang lead and played lead guitar. Julie was drums, Donnica guitar and Tracey (later Dee) was bass. They were a good laugh, and took the kind of kidding a bunch of schoolgirls could expect from a mainly male audience with good humour and only a few rude gestures at us... :)

I was invited along to the shoot of the video for one of their singles. Unfortunately it wasn't a very good song and didn't do particularly well... they should have done one of their own, not covered an old Gary Glitter song! We all spent several hours headbanging in a cold church hall and the girls and their manager/dad were nice to us all (beer was provided!)

They did two albums (Rock Goddess and Hell hath no fury) recut onto a two CD set with the singles and a couple of extra songs by Polygram in 1998. The CD set is definately worth tracking down if you are into rock music.

Heavy Metal Rock 'n' Roll single (A & M 1983)
Rock Goddess full-length (A & M 1983)
Hell hath no Fury (A & M 1984?) - RealMedia sample (at the risk of getting into trouble here...) *

Since I put this page up I've had emails from a couple of fans of the band, one of whom sent me a link to this page, which goes into great detail of exactly what all the members of the band have been doing, and another who's building a rock based site with a page on the girls which is here. Thanks for your info!

Here's a pic sent in by Donnica (on the right) of Rock Goddess right at the start. Left to right: Tracey Lamb, Jody Turner, Julie Turner (the Munchkin on the drums!) and Donnica herself. The shot was taken at the Lyceim in London in 1977, during a Runaways sound check. Donnica says this was her first time wearing eyeshadow, and by the end it was running all down her face...

We always knew the band was hot stuff! :P
